Tips for Keeping Your Home Warm this Winter

Winter is here and with a blast! Make your house cozier and your heating more affordable this year by reading our hints below.
Weather-Stripping: Replace worn or damaged weather stripping around exterior doors and windows.

Install a door sweep: Sweeps are to seal the gap at the bottom of your door, insulating a room.

Add attic insulation: When it comes to heat, around 25% is lost through the roof. Many older homes have less insulation than homes built today, but even adding insulation to a newer home can pay for itself within a few years. Also, remember a tightly sealed house is just as important as insulation.

Install a programmable thermostat: During the cold of the winter, your heat can stay steady as it follows your programmed temperature schedule.

Seal furnace ducts: A duct system that is well-designed and properly sealed can make your home more comfortable, energy efficient, and safer.

Hot Water Heater: If you have a hot water tank, make sure it is properly insulated. This will keep the water warmer for longer, and reduce heating costs.

Caulk your window frames: Apply caulk to seal off air leaks around windows. Caulk only costs a few dollars and can add up to major savings on your energy bill.

Use your curtains: Open your curtains and let the sunlight in during the day to make use of this free heat. When it gets dark, shut your curtains, which act as another layer of insulation and keep warmth in your rooms.

Tend to Your Fireplace: Even though your fireplace may seem like a source of heat, it can be a heat-drain if you don’t tend to it properly. Don’t let the warmth generated by the flames go up in smoke; harness it to keep your household more comfortable.
